Windows 9 is turning out to be one of the worst kept secrets in technology. We’ve already seen leaked screenshots and read many rumors but we have some more today. Screenshots provided to close Microsoft partners were leaked to German tech sites, showing desktop-focused changes for Windows 9.
The screenshots show a technical preview of the next version of Windows, code-named “Threshold.” One of the most noticeable differences in these leaked screens is a new search and virtual desktop icons in the taskbar. Universal search has been moved from the Charms Bar and relocated to the taskbar, making it easier to find for first-time users.

One screenshot shows the introduction of virtual desktops, which is a feature that allows you to create multiple desktops to better organize your opened apps. OS X has had this feature since 2006 with the introduction of OS X Leopard. There have been countless third-partyvirtual desktop apps for Windows but it’s nice to see Microsoft finally integrating the feature into its operating system.
Another interesting feature seen in the leaked screens is a notification center. Windows 8 introduced flat, floating notifications but there is no centralized place to go view past notifications. It appears that Microsoft is taking a page out of Apple’s playbook by making its desktop operating system look and act more like a mobile OS.

Microsoft is expected to debut the Windows Technical Preview on September 30th but the finished product isn’t expected until next year.
